Tights – they’re not exactly the sexiest pieces of fashion clothing, are they? From bad memories of 400 denier wool (so thick they almost looked like pants) from school to the less than glamorous “tights dance” where you struggled to practically lift them up around your chest in the hope that to prevent sagging at midday gusset. It’s fair to say I wasn’t the biggest fan, but with the practically Baltic weather conditions that a typical British winter brings, tights make getting dressed a lot easier (and my legs are infinitely warmer), so I did This time I am determined to join in, especially in the party season.

In fact, in my search for ways to wear socks, I’ve come across many sources of inspiration that go far beyond simple practicalities. They can be a great and effortless way (without the tights dance) to bring a whole new perspective to your winter wardrobe, especially party wear. The right pair will make your outfit feel more curated, whether you’re making a statement with a bold color or going timelessly chic in sheer 15-denier black.

As the woman who was mocked for wearing a pair of (in retrospect, very questionable) eggplant-colored tights ONCE in her early teens, I vowed never to buy anything more vibrant than plain black again. However, the color blocking trend (matching the shade of your tights to your party dress and shoes) might tempt me to break my self-imposed rule. The tights equivalent of “go big or go home” isn’t for everyone, but those willing to take the risk will be rewarded with a sensational party outfit.

A bright pop of color such as red with cream, purple and caramel is also a winning combination during the day, which can be achieved with tights or socks for a contemporary “fashion” touch without looking too imposing under a knitted dress or long skirt.

For me, having just made the switch to hosiery, glitter or embellished tights are the logical next step to my trusty black 15 denier tights, especially for the festive season. I love how they add an unexpected element of fun and whimsy under black tuxedo pants; the perfect addition if your cocktail outfit is missing a little something. Or if you simply want to breathe new life into your favorite party dress, this understated style is the perfect way to transform a recurring ensemble at minimal cost.

Cream or just lace tights in general may be the style closest to your grandma’s stocking drawer, but don’t let that put you off. Not only are the thicker wool options incredibly warm (your legs will thank you), they also add an elegant touch to cocktail dresses and only enhance the ladylike glamor of a faux fur coat and OTT crystal jewelry.
