Danny Rohl has called for a reaction against Blackburn Rovers after insisting Sheffield Wednesday deserved to lose to Preston North End.

The Owls earned a 1-1 draw at home against Rovers’ Lancashire rivals while John Eustace’s side traveled to Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

But despite a late comeback and a draw, Rohl was frustrated and angry with his team’s performance.

“We didn’t deserve anything today, I have to say,” Rohl told The Star.

“For me, Preston were the better team, they deserved to win and we were very lucky. That’s not what I want to see from my team and I think you’ve asked me before what the difference is between home and away games – I think it’s a bit in our mindset. We want to play good football and then do the hard work at home and we have to understand that.

“In this division you have to do the basics right, be aggressive, mean, organized and have a good network. Then you can grow into the game and then you can play beautiful football.

“The first ten minutes showed a lot today. I consider it a defeat, that’s what I told my team. We didn’t gain a point, we lost two points and now we have to react on Tuesday.”

Wednesday sits ninth in the table before kick-off, three places and five points behind Rovers. Both teams needed wins on the final day of last season to stay in the championship, but Rohl is not content to tread water.

“Maybe I’m a little more critical today than many others,” he added. “They say ‘Oh yes, the comeback, another point’, but for our ambitions and my ambitions, the performance today wasn’t right.”

“I was very direct with my team today. Now you can say that we got points in our four games, that’s not bad. But the performance, especially today, was not what I would expect from my team.

“Our strength last year was our home performance. You turn the two away wins into two home wins and take the away draw and think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s fine’.”

“But I am ambitious, my team is ambitious and we have to stop talking about the table. We need to talk about the performance, our identity, our journey and what we have to work hard on.”
