It wasn’t the last league derby at Goodison Park, but Everton made sure the young fan who traveled from Australia for the game didn’t have a wasted trip after all.
Mackenzie Kinsella, a 15-year-old from Sydney, used his savings to take part in the historic Merseyside derby, but the game was postponed four hours before kick-off on Saturday due to the impact of Storm Darragh. A new date for Everton’s final league game against Liverpool at Goodison has not yet been set.
After learning of Mackenzie’s misfortune, Everton captain Séamus Coleman invited the supporter to the club’s training ground at Finch Farm on Monday. Coleman was there to greet the teenager with a signed Everton jersey before meeting the rest of Sean Dyche’s squad, including his favorite player Beto, and the coaching staff. Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford gifted Mackenzie a pair of signed gloves. Dyche invited Mackenzie to join the team meeting and also take a team photo before the training session, which he observed.
Defender James Tarkowski has offered fans tickets to Everton’s game at Arsenal on Saturday. Mackenzie, whose mother is from Liverpool and who is staying with an aunt during his two-week stay, watched Everton beat Wolves 4-0 at Goodison before the derby was postponed.
Everton, meanwhile, donated food for the derby to local food banks and other charities in the city with the help of volunteers from Fans Supporting Foodbanks. Everton In the Community have also received items to be used in their programs this week.
