Gareth Southgate’s former England assistant Steve Holland is to be appointed as the new coach of Japanese club Yokohama F-Marinos, local media reported on Monday.
The 54-year-old was Southgate’s right-hand man during his eight years as England coach, during which time he reached two European Championship finals and one World Cup semi-final.
He has been unemployed since resigning alongside Southgate following England’s defeat by Spain in the European Championship final in Germany in July.
According to reports in Japanese media, Holland would take over Yokohama ahead of the new J. League season, which begins in February.
He watched from the stands as Yokohama lost 2-0 at home to Nagoya Grampus in the final game of the 2024 season on Sunday.
Yokohama finished ninth in the 20-team first division table.
Holland coached at Chelsea for eight years under several managers, but his only experience of coaching a team came at Crewe Alexandra between 2007 and 2008.
Yokohama is part of the City Football Group and was coached by Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou from 2018 to 2021.
They started the season with former Liverpool and Leeds striker Harry Kewell in the dugout, but sacked him mid-season and appointed his assistant John Hutchinson as interim manager.
Under Kewell, they reached the Asian Champions League final in May, but lost to Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.
