Charli XCX has once again put her stamp on the pure trend. The music star stepped out in a sheer ensemble on Saturday to attend the Variety Hitmaker Brunch in Los Angeles, where she was honored as Hitmaker of the Year.
The music star, whose latest album Brat became a cultural phenomenon and aesthetic movement since its release last summer, chose to wear Saint Laurent for the occasion. Charli wore a jersey dress by creative director Anthony Vaccarello with sheer panels on the skirt and chest. She completed her look, curated by stylist Chris Horan, with Saint Laurent’s Vicky Miniaudiere handbag in plexiglass and Saint Laurent’s Emmanuelle pumps in draped jersey.

At Variety’s Hitmaker Brunch this year, Charli was honored for her songwriting innovations with “Brat.” Her catalog also includes her debut album “True Romance” from 2013, “Sucker” from 2014 and her mixtapes “No. 1 Angel” and “Pop 2,” as well as hits she wrote and performed on, such as Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” Charli’s contemporary Jack Antonoff was also honored at the event as Producer of the Decade.
Earlier this fall, Charli embraced the sheer trend alongside Lorde in a sheer look from Saint Laurent’s Fall 2024 collection while performing for Charli’s “Sweat” tour in New York. Charli wore the collection’s opening look, which consisted of a sheer hosiery tube dress. Over the top, she wore a coat embroidered with feathers that gave the illusion of fur and rectangular sunglasses.
The sheer trend has emerged as a staple on the spring 2024 runway over the past year, with see-through interpretations from Prada, Givenchy and other luxury brands. It also dominated the spring 2025 runway in the collections of Khaite, Ralph Lauren, Jason Wu, Alaïa, Christian Siriano, LaQuan Smith, Grace Ling, Luar and Tory Burch. Not to mention, sheer styles have also been a popular choice on the red carpet at awards shows over the past year, including the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, following this year’s appearance at the Met Gala, ESPY Awards, Oscar parties and MTV VMAs 2024 came out on top.
The sheer trend can be traced back to the ’70s and ’80s, when Yves Saint Laurent and Halston showed subtle sheer looks, as did Marc Bohan for Dior. In the 1990s, the trend was given new life by Tom Ford in his role as creative director at Gucci, and in the following decade, sheer pieces featured in the collections of Marc Jacobs, Versace, Alexander McQueen and Calvin Klein.
